J. Crosby Plains Rifle
Dublin Core
Title
J. Crosby Plains Rifle
Description
Muzzle loading heavy barrel, double set trigger rifle. Made by J. Crosby in Illinois in 1854 and bought by Col. Goodnight in 1856. The maker placed this inscription on the barrel; “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you.” It was carried by Goodnight until the end of the Civil War. According to Goodnight, it was the only gun he knew of upon the frontier with a reliable, true range of over 200 yards. The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum acquired this rifle in 1929.
